Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Most dental insurance plans provide coverage for preventive and restorative dentistry. However, cosmetic treatment is not covered because it is considered an “elective,” not medically necessary. This is why we encourage our patients to use their benefits on preventive care to not only get access to treatment right away but also minimize the potential for worsening oral health in the future.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Without seeing your dental insurance plan, we cannot know for sure what your plan will cover; however, there are some similar coverage levels you can expect when reviewing your policy:
- 80–100% preventive care
- 70–80% minor restorative care
- 50% major restorative care
If you want a plan that covers orthodontics, you’ll need to read the fine print to determine if their terms dictate an age limit (i.e., 19 and under) or the type of braces covered (i.e., metal braces, Invisalign).
